Cherise

MUSIC

Cherise
ABOUT

She’s a Soul Girl at heart with a bold, punky attitude.

Named by Clash magazine as 'one of the women raising the bar for Soul and Jazz in the UK”, CHERISE is one of the most sought after emerging young Soul singers and songwriters.

Her hotly anticipated debut album ‘Calling’ was released in summer 2023. In ‘Calling' CHERISE weaves a collection of emotive, and deeply moving explorations of family, romantic love and growing into your truest self.

If her EP 'Remedy' was her bold foray into Soul, 'Calling' sets out CHERISE as a truly one-of-a-kind artist. She digs deep into the contours of falling in and out of love, and stitches together all the parts of herself as a Black woman: the sensual, the familial and the endlessly creative. CHERISE pays homage to her elders who journeyed to England as part of the Windrush generation on heartfelt singles like '2 Steppin’, and the titular 'Calling.' “With this year being the 75th anniversary of Windrush, especially, that ties into the themes of being grateful for what I’ve got but having a keen desire to define for myself – and find power in – what it means to be second-generation”

‘Calling' has achieved critical acclaim, described by CLASH Magazine as “beautiful” and “imbued with real power” with the single ‘Secrets’ praised by MTV as “so exceptional that it’s shocking she’s only been putting music out for a few years”  and Notion magazine notes CHERISE’s “expert storytelling” and "silky vocals and soul sensibility [that] move the listener through dimensions”.

Her talent has been recognised by some of the most respected artists in Soul and Jazz as a rising star on the UK music scene. CHERISE has collaborated with artists including Steam Down, Reuban James, Omar and Nubiyan Twist. In 2021, Gregory Porter invited her to sing alongside him for the Disney Christmas animation and worldwide campaign. In 2022, CHERISE was also chosen to open for Michael Kiwanuka at L’Olympia, Paris and Colisée de Roubaix in Lille and Jamie Cullum for his Spring / Summer European tour. CHERISE’s soulful reimagining of the Nora Jones classic ‘Sunrise’ features on the 2022 'BlueNote Reimagined: II’ album.

In Summer 2023, CHERISE opened the main stage at Cross the Tracks Festival (UK), performed at Love Supreme (UK) & Elbjazz Festival in Hamburg and performed her first UK headline tour.

ABOUT

Girlcar was born en-route to a party, when everyone wanted to ride in Girlcar, because the tunes were just more fun. It’s the moniker that Nathalie, Waking Dreams co-founder plays under, when she isn't in her day job as studio mother. She brings the same energy she channels through studio directly to the dance-floor. Having spent the last three years carving out space for her community in the East London movement world, she’s returning to the place Waking Dreams was born; The Dancefloor. Investing the time in a long-held passion at long last, and turning the classic wellness joke of the “DJ-to-Yoga Teacher" pipeline in reverse.

Driven by a love of dancing, Girlcars' selections cut to the body: bass-heavy, smutty, unapologetically queer. While her sound is still evolving, she thrives on the tongue-in-cheek moments of the party when things have gotten weird, curating sets that prioritise play, joy and a bit of sleaze.

Mafalda

Music

Mafalda
ABOUT

Mafalda has a motto: only play the records you really, really love. You can see that ethos in action when she’s behind the decks, as the beginning of a track makes her smile, or as she sings along the whole way through. The Portuguese DJ’s sets are wide-ranging, spanning anything from soul, gospel and jazz to house, R&B and Brazilian rarities – but they’re always uplifting and forever joyful.

Over the past 10 years, she’s become a celebrated selector, guided by the search for songs that feel like a warm hug. It’s why she was called upon to open for Madlib, for a Boiler Room session in Madrid, and invited by Four Tet to play on his curated bill for Nuits Sonores festival in Lyon, and is a standout name on European festivals like Field Day, Glastonbury, We Out Here and Primavera. Her guest mixes for Dekmantel, Gilles Peterson’s 6 Music show, Resident Advisor and beyond are thoughtful, inventive and laced with the occasional what-the-hell rarity. Testament to her taste, Mafalda was also a recent guest on Tom Ravenscroft’s BBC podcast Peel Acres, where she got to rifle through legendary British broadcaster John Peel’s record collection.

Jazz was the seed for Mafalda’s DJ journey, specifically hearing Sadar Bahar play a jazz tune in the early hours at Corsica Studios in 2014. It also inspired her to relocate from Lisbon to London, where she found a home on the UK capital’s dancefloors. She soon got the record bug, and landed a job at London record shop Cosmos. Until it shut in 2015, you could also find her at storied basement club Plastic People, the pitch-black boom room where she met Floating Points. Mafalda was instrumental in the early days of his reissues label, Melodies International, putting together the various fanzines that accompanied the releases, and then going on to co-run the label and programme its events until 2019. Memorably, she drew the image of a hand holding a rose that’s on the front of one of the label’s most celebrated reissues, ‘You’re A Melody’ by Aged In Harmony, and is still a resident at the global parties of the same name.

Since then, Mafalda’s monthly NTS radio show Tropic Of Love has built a dedicated following and turned into a label, “guided by mood rather than genre”, she says. It was named for a Shirley Nanette song, which sprung out of Mafalda’s cult DJ residency at a pub in east London and originally started on Red Bull Radio in 2018. She’s a passionate record collector, but not elitist, and her own imprint is her way of sharing the music she loves even further. 2023 is set to be an even bigger year for Mafalda, as she heads to Ibiza for the Glitterbox residency, to Morocco for Oasis Festival and Albania for Kala. Look out for her back-to-back sets with Glasgow’s Rebecca Vasmant, too, which have been must-attend sets of the summer.

Savana Funk

Music

Savana Funk
ABOUT

Savana Funk embody the essence of the live band, combining funk, rock, blues and African music with incendiary jams, irresistible grooves and an enviable stage presence, with a fast-growing loyal audience and a growing number of gigs across Europe.

Aldo, Blake and Youssef met in the spring of 2015 in Bologna, and a rare human and musical syntony immediately clicked. The three wasted no time and decided to form a band, immediately starting to play many live shows, experimenting with ideas and writing music. The first album is a self-production, ‘MUSICA ANALOGA’ , and was released in 2016. In 2017, they released their second album ‘SAVANA FUNK’ (Brutture Moderne / Audioglobe).

In September 2018 they release their third album, ‘Bring in the New’ (Brutture Moderne / Audioglobe). This third work gets a lot of reviews, excellent critical response as well as public reception.

The band continues in a tireless live activity, participating in dozens of festivals and shows. The stage is the congenial dimension to appreciate the band's spirit.

In the summer of 2019, they are invited to some dates of the Jova Beach Party, Jovanotti's summer concerts: they play in front of tens of thousands of people, even doing long jam sessions on stage with Lorenzo. During the following winter months, they were invited to Propaganda Live on La7.

June 2021 saw the release of the album ‘Tindouf’ (Garrincha GoGo) distributed worldwide, followed by the legendary ‘Tindouf Tour’, a very long tour of over 100 dates around the world, during which they performed on the stages of major Italian and international festivals, including Firenze Rocks with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, A Cielo Aperto with Kokoroko, Jova Beach Party with Jovanotti, Tallin Music Week and Pin International Music Conference in Skopje.

In October 2022 the latest album ‘Ghibli’ (Garrincha GoGo) was released, anticipated by the title track of the same name, which entered international playlists as Global Groove and exceeded 500,000 streams on Spotify. The album is presented with a club tour that records numerous sold-outs and confirms Savana Funk as one of the fastest growing live bands on the live circuit.

In the spring of 2023 they take on tour the special project Savana Funk feat Willie Peyote: 5 sold-out dates that see the original fusion of the band's funk sounds with the bars of the rapper from Turin, with enthusiastic results.

In April 2023 it was time for ‘Ghibli - The remixes’, an ep of remixes by producers and DJs such as Bruno Belissimo, Dj Rocca, Frank Sativa and launched by ‘Lipari - Cosmic Remix’ made by Gaudi: an internationally renowned producer and multi-instrumentalist. The new material contaminates the band's groove-oriented sound with that of clubbing, further expanding their audience.

Summer 2023 sees Savana Funk embark on their biggest and most important festival tour ever, with thousands of people dancing at their concerts such as at the Sherwood Festival (with Seun Kuti), Sziget Festival, Tanta Robba (with Nu Genea).

Between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, Savana Funk are involved in the Savana Sound System project: a club tour that sees them jam with DJs and producers such as Gaudi, Rocca, Zingabeat and Loopus in Fabula: Savana's music becomes even more clubbing-oriented.

Spring 2024 sees the arrival of Raha: a collaborative EP under the name Savana Funk & Gaudi, to be released by Record Kicks, which will explore the sound of Afro-Cosmic Disco.
